San Diego State defeated Arizona by a final score of 61-57 in Tucson. The Aztecs scored on nine of its first 11 possessions.
Despite losing four starters, San Diego State continues to build upon its 10-11 success.
“You have to believe that you’re good,” Steve Fisher said, “and our kids believe that they’re good.”
“When you go 34-3, even role players believe," said Arizona coach Sean Miller. "They’ve done a really good job from being role players to being really valuable players.”
Chase Tapley and Jamaal Franklin are SDSU's leading scorers this season at better than 16 points per game after scoring single-digits last season.
San Diego State's eight game in 23 days to begin the season is perhaps the most difficult schedule of any school in the country.
They face three opponents in the preseason Top 25, two others receiving votes, four teams from BCS conferences and six teams picked to finish first or second in their leagues.
They face Baylor, USC, Long Beach State, Arizona, Santa Barbara, Cal and San Diego.
“I would challenge anybody in America to show their next six or seven games and say that it could even begin to compare with what we’re playing,” says San Diego State coach Steve Fisher. “I don’t think anybody is playing that. Nobody.”
Jamaal Franklin, sophomore guard for San Diego State, scored 31 points in Sunday's 89-74 win over UC Davis.
The Aztecs lost their four top scorers from the 10-11 season.
Franklin scored just 64 points during his entire freshman season.
